About Me

Hello everyone. My name is Patrick Higgins and I am an 8th grade English teacher at XX middle school. I am excited to be here and participate in a job I love. I am thrilled to work with you all and hope to get to know you all better as the year progresses.

My Education and Background

I grew up in Texas but actually attended UHM where I majored in Korean Language/Linguistics & Sociology. I then went on to complete a Masters in TESOL. I have worked as an English teacher in a variety of international contexts since 2013 and have recently transitioned into secondary English back in the states.

My interests

I love to watch movies and TV shows -- and particularly enjoy watching foreign films! When I'm not watching movies, you'll probably find me reading a book, taking a walk or spending time with friends and family.

Teaching and My Philosophy

I've always been interested in languages and our mastery of them. I originally went into teaching largely to pursue this interest. Over time I came to realize that teaching was profoundly motivating and have dedicated myself to growing and developing ever since.

My teaching beliefs are very much so oriented helping students develop both content knowledge and critical thinking skills. I strive to ensure the classroom always provides opportunities for students to analyze, critique and investigate the subject matter.

About the Class

We'll be studying English language arts together this year. Throughout the year we'll be reading a range of different texts: scientific, historical, and literature-based. We'll also be working on developing our writing skills in a variety of text types, including narrative, informative, explanatory and research-based writing.

The course is hopefully going to be fun, engaging and at times challenging. If you're ever feeling as though you are struggling and need additional support, do please let me know and I would be happy to help. My goal is to ensure everyone achieves to a high level and enjoys their experience in the class.
